This lubrication glossary explains common oil, grease, filtration, fuel, viscosity, additive, testing, and maintenance terms in plain technical language. Each definition is intentionally concise; use the related LubeGuide topic pages when a selection or diagnostic decision requires more context.
Lubrication terms and definitions
- Absolute viscosity
- Another name for dynamic viscosity: resistance to shear expressed independently of density, commonly in mPa·s or cP.
- Additive package
- The balanced combination of detergents, dispersants, anti-wear agents, antioxidants, corrosion inhibitors, viscosity modifiers, and other chemistry in a finished lubricant.
- Aeration
- Air dispersed through oil as bubbles or foam. Aeration can reduce hydraulic stiffness, disrupt films, accelerate oxidation, and interfere with control systems.
- API service category
- A gasoline or diesel engine-oil performance category administered through the American Petroleum Institute licensing system, such as API SQ or CK-4.
- Ashless
- Chemistry that does not contain metal elements expected to leave sulfated ash in the standard test. Ashless does not mean additive-free.
- Base oil
- The primary fluid portion of a lubricant before the complete additive package is considered. Base oil can be mineral, synthetic, bio-derived, or another chemistry.
- Base Oil Group
- An API classification based on saturates, sulfur, and viscosity index for Groups I through III, with PAO in Group IV and other base stocks in Group V.
- Beta ratio
- A filter-efficiency expression comparing the number of particles upstream and downstream at a stated particle size under a defined test.
- Boundary lubrication
- A regime where the fluid film does not fully separate surfaces and protection depends heavily on surface films, materials, and anti-wear or friction-modifier chemistry.
- Brookfield viscosity
- A low-temperature apparent-viscosity measurement used in several lubricant specifications, including automotive gear-oil and transmission-fluid requirements.
- Cloud point
- The temperature at which wax crystals first become visible under a defined cooling test. It does not directly equal the fuel or oil failure temperature.
- Cold filter plugging point
- A standardized diesel-fuel test indicating the temperature at which wax growth prevents passage through the specified filter apparatus under test conditions.
- Demulsibility
- A lubricant's ability to separate from water after mixing. Strong demulsibility is important in many turbine, circulating, and industrial systems.
- Detergent
- An additive that helps control deposits and neutralize acids. Metallic detergents can contribute to sulfated ash.
- Dispersant
- An additive that helps keep fine insoluble material suspended so particles are less likely to agglomerate into sludge or deposits.
- Dropping point
- A grease test temperature at which material passes through the test apparatus. It is not the maximum safe service temperature.
- Dynamic viscosity
- Resistance to shear, commonly reported in pascal-seconds, mPa·s, or centipoise. It differs from kinematic viscosity by density.
- Elastohydrodynamic lubrication
- Full-film lubrication in concentrated contacts where pressure increases lubricant viscosity and elastically deforms the surfaces, as in rolling bearings and gears.
- EP additive
- Extreme-pressure chemistry intended to protect highly loaded sliding contacts by forming a sacrificial surface layer under severe temperature and pressure.
- Flash point
- The lowest temperature at which vapour above a sample ignites momentarily under a specified test. It is not the same as fire point or operating limit.
- Foam
- Air bubbles collected at the lubricant surface. Foam tendency and foam stability are different measurements; both can matter to reservoir performance.
- Friction modifier
- An additive that changes friction behavior at contacting surfaces. It can support fuel economy, clutch performance, or reduced stick-slip depending on the application.
- Full-film lubrication
- Operation where a lubricant film completely separates the surfaces. Hydrodynamic and elastohydrodynamic lubrication are full-film regimes.
- HTHS viscosity
- High-temperature, high-shear viscosity measured at 150°C under severe shear, used to define hot-film behavior in many engine-oil standards.
- Hydrodynamic lubrication
- A full-film regime where relative motion and a converging clearance generate pressure in the lubricant sufficient to carry the load.
- Hydrocracking
- A refining process using hydrogen, catalysts, pressure, and temperature to convert and improve petroleum molecules for cleaner, more stable base oil.
- ILSAC
- The International Lubricant Specification Advisory Committee, which develops passenger-car gasoline-engine oil performance requirements used with API licensing.
- ISO VG
- The ISO 3448 viscosity classification for industrial liquid lubricants, based on kinematic viscosity at 40°C.
- Kinematic viscosity
- Dynamic viscosity divided by density, commonly expressed as mm²/s or cSt and measured at defined temperatures such as 40°C or 100°C.
- Low-speed pre-ignition
- Abnormal combustion before the intended spark event in certain boosted gasoline direct-injection engines under low-speed, high-load operation.
- Lubricity
- A general description of a fluid's ability to reduce friction and wear under conditions where viscosity alone does not fully explain performance.
- Micron
- One micrometre, equal to one-millionth of a metre. A micron rating needs an associated efficiency and test method to describe filter performance.
- Mixed lubrication
- A regime where part of the load is carried by the fluid film and part by contacting surface asperities.
- NLGI grade
- A grease consistency classification based on worked penetration. It does not identify base-oil viscosity, thickener type, or overall performance.
- Noack volatility
- An evaporation-loss test for lubricating oil at elevated temperature. Lower loss can support oil-consumption and deposit control but is not a complete quality score.
- Oxidation
- Chemical reaction with oxygen that can increase acidity, viscosity, varnish, sludge, and deposit formation. Heat, catalysts, and contamination accelerate it.
- PAO
- Polyalphaolefin, a synthetic hydrocarbon base stock classified in API Group IV and used for properties such as low-temperature flow and volatility control.
- Pour point
- The lowest temperature at which an oil still shows movement in a standardized test. It is not a guaranteed pumpability or start-up temperature.
- SAPS
- Sulfated ash, phosphorus, and sulfur—formulation-related measures controlled in many oils intended for emissions aftertreatment compatibility.
- Shear stability
- Resistance to viscosity loss when polymer molecules or other structures experience mechanical stress in service or testing.
- Sludge
- Soft or semi-solid deposits formed from oxidation products, contaminants, water, fuel, soot, and other degraded material.
- Stribeck curve
- A conceptual relationship showing how friction changes as a contact moves among boundary, mixed, and full-film lubrication with viscosity, speed, and load.
- Total acid number
- A titration result representing acidic constituents in oil. Interpretation depends on lubricant type, new-oil baseline, method, and trend.
- Total base number
- A titration measure related to alkaline reserve, often used in engine-oil monitoring. Different methods and formulations can produce different interpretations.
- Tribology
- The science and engineering of interacting surfaces in relative motion, including friction, wear, and lubrication.
- Viscosity
- A fluid's resistance to flow or shear. It changes with temperature and can also respond to pressure, shear rate, contamination, and degradation.
- Viscosity index
- A calculated number describing the rate of kinematic-viscosity change between 40°C and 100°C relative to reference oils.
- Viscosity index improver
- A polymer used to reduce the rate at which a lubricant loses viscosity as temperature rises, supporting multigrade behavior.
- Wear metal
- An element measured in used oil that may originate from component wear, contamination, additives, or sample handling. Trends and context are essential.
- ZDDP
- Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate, a multifunctional anti-wear and antioxidant additive whose zinc or phosphorus concentration alone cannot rank finished-oil quality.
How to read lubricant data correctly
Every property needs conditions. Viscosity without a temperature and method is incomplete. A filter micron value without efficiency is incomplete. An oil specification without its revision or approval wording can also be incomplete. Product comparisons should use the same test method, units, and measurement conditions.
Many terms describe only one dimension of performance. Base-oil group does not rank finished lubricants. Zinc concentration does not prove wear protection. Pour point does not guarantee pumpability. Flash point does not define a safe continuous operating temperature. Use the complete specification and equipment guidance.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an oil standard and an approval?
An industry standard sets shared requirements. An OEM approval adds a manufacturer process and usually applies to a specific product and viscosity listed by that manufacturer.
Are centistokes and centipoise interchangeable?
No. Centistokes express kinematic viscosity, while centipoise express dynamic viscosity. Density at the same temperature connects them.
Does synthetic identify a performance level?
No. Synthetic describes a broad base-stock or marketing category. The finished lubricant still needs the correct viscosity and performance specification.
What does “meets requirements” mean?
It usually represents a supplier performance claim. It may not mean that an OEM tested, licensed, or formally approved the product.
Why can one term have different meanings?
Industry, region, test method, and application can change usage. Read the standard or equipment context rather than relying on a word alone.
