Quick answer: a viscosity grade such as SAE 5W-30 describes how an oil flows at defined temperatures. A performance category such as API CK-4 or JASO MA2 sets broader test requirements. An OEM approval such as MB 229.51, DFS 93K222, or Volvo VDS-5 adds manufacturer-specific limits. When a manual names an approval, matching only the viscosity grade is not enough.

The safest starting point is always the owner's manual, service information, or engine manufacturer. Then match the complete specification and viscosity requirement to a product data sheet or an official approved-product list. Marketing phrases such as “recommended for” and “meets the performance requirements of” can be useful, but they are not automatically the same as a formally licensed or approved product.

Understanding oil specification language

  1. Identify the equipment precisely. Record the model year, engine or transmission code, emissions configuration, market, and service category. Similar model names can use different hardware and fluid requirements.
  2. Find the complete requirement. Note both the viscosity grade and every named performance category or OEM approval. Also check temperature charts, severe-service notes, drain intervals, and superseding technical bulletins.
  3. Read the relevant LubeGuide entry. Use the guide to decode the specification, understand its purpose, and locate likely official verification sources.
  4. Confirm the product claim. Compare the exact code and revision on the product data sheet. When formal approval is required, check the OEM or licensing organization's current approved-product list.
  5. Resolve conflicts conservatively. If a label, seller listing, and vehicle manual disagree, pause. Ask the equipment manufacturer or a qualified service provider rather than assuming a cross-reference is interchangeable.

How to verify an oil approval

Begin with the wording. “Approved to” or a listing on an OEM approval sheet generally indicates formal recognition for the named specification. “Meets,” “suitable for,” or “recommended for” may be a supplier-supported performance claim without a current OEM license. That distinction does not automatically make a product unsuitable; however, it changes who is making the claim and what documentation supports it.

Next, verify the exact revision. A familiar family name can contain multiple generations, and a later number may not be backward-compatible in every viscosity grade or application. Also check whether the OEM list identifies a specific product name and viscosity rather than the entire brand. Finally, save the product data sheet and approval-list date with maintenance records when warranty, fleet policy, or extended drains make documentation important.

Is an SAE viscosity grade the same as an oil specification?

No. An SAE grade describes viscosity behavior at defined low- and high-temperature conditions. A performance specification adds chemical, bench, and engine-test requirements. A correct lubricant may need to match both.

Does “meets the requirements” mean a product is OEM approved?

Not necessarily. The phrase often represents a lubricant supplier's suitability claim. Formal approval normally requires the exact product and viscosity to appear on a current OEM approval list or carry recognized licensing evidence.

Can a newer oil specification always replace an older one?
